Toronto officer charged in Canadian streetcar shooting

Posted on

Ontario’s police watchdog has charged the Toronto officer responsible for shooting teenager Sammy Yatim with murder. The 18 year old was holding a knife in an empty streetcar.

The shooting was last month caught on video by a number of bystanders, and went viral. The city was left in an uproar, with hundreds of citizens taking to the streets to protest.

Both the Canadian public and the news media were left debating whether BWV equipment should be a requirement for officers, as the evidence would have shown if the officer in question was right to use deadly force.

The Special Investigations Unit announced Monday that it has charged Const. James Forcillo with second-degree murder. He was suspended from the police force last month.

Ontario’s ombudsman Andre Marin has also launched an investigation, probing what kind of direction the provincial government provides to police for defusing conflict situations.
